I always steer clear of the soft, pretty tasteless hot cross rolls you can get in the supermarket around this time of year. They’re okay toasted with butter but still not great and certainly not a patch on homemade raisin cinnamon bread.

It never even occured to be to make hot cross buns from scratch but these look fantastic, a world away from the bland ones you get in the supermarket. They’re really more like scones and they look oh so yummy! Plus according to superstition, if you bake some on good friday, they’ll not only keep for a YEAR without going mouldy, but they’re also protect you against fire and shipwrecks. So win/win.
