Honey wholewheat bread

March 13, 2011 By Kerry Cooks 6 Comments

There’s nothing quite as yummy as homemade bread, but to make it healthier, I make it wholemeal bread! Here’s a recipe for a tasty, nutty, honey wholewheat bread thats super easy to make.

You start out with these ingredients

Now this recipe  is in american ‘cups’ which is a really easy way of baking with no need to measure anything out with scales.

  • 3.5 cups of wholewheat flour (I used normal wholemeal and also a wholemeal with seeds and grains)
  • .25 cup of olive oil
  • .25 cup honey
  • 1-1.25 cups hand hot water
  • 2 sachets of instant dried yeast
  • .25 cup milk
  • teaspoon salt

Here’s what it looks like when its all mixed together – I mix the flour, yeast and salt before adding the wet ingredients. The water should be hand hot (but not boiling) in order to activate the yeast so that they wake up and make the bread rise. Its pretty messy at this stage, but keep stirring with a wooden spoon and it will gradually come together to a cohesive dough. The next step is kneading!

After kneading for about 5-6 minutes, it should look something like this – it will be springy to the touch and not too sticky at this point so you’ll know its ready. Now its time to put it in an oiled bowl, cover with a tea towel and leave for about 1-2 hours, or until it looks like its doubled in size.

Once everything was nicely risen, I decided to make a small loaf of bread, plus three rolls and two breadsticks!

And here’s the after picture of the rolls and bread sticks! They were super yummy

And here’s the finished loaf – cutting it open is the most nerve-wracking (if you’re the type to get nervous about bread!) part as this is the first time you find out if your bread is a SUCCESS or not. If its a success, it will look like, well, bread! If something has gone less well in the kneading or the rising, then the inside of the bread will be claggy and moist rather than fluffy and lovely.

I like the way the rolls and the breadsticks on the cooling rack look like a three-eyed alien.

    okay, bye.
