Happy Wednesday, friends! And happy Bake-Off day! As usual, I’ll be recapping each episode of the Bake-Off right here on my blog, which means you’ll be getting FOUR posts instead of three most weeks, you lucky lot! Don’t forget to stop by after each episode to share your thoughts!
Today I thought I’d share the last of my honeymoon snaps with you – this time of New York! We spent close to eight days in the big apple, which was (and felt like!) a LONG time. We took the Amtrak up from Mystic (a place it broke my heart to leave!) which took about three hours, but the amtrak is amazing – free wifi and plugs for you to plug in your laptop – plus so much room!
We stayed in the basement apartment of a beautiful brownstone in Windsor Terrace in Brooklyn. It was just around the corner from Prospect Park, the most beautiful park in Brooklyn (and designed by the same people who created Central Park), as well as being super close to the subway for the F train – in fact you could hear it rumbling underground from our apartment!
The first thing we did in New York after heading to our apartment was visit Top of the Rock for those amazing views of the city. We visited at sunset and it was breathtaking, although very busy! I just love the Empire State Building, it’s such an iconic and beautiful building.
The next day we explored Brooklyn and headed to a couple of well-reviewed bakeries. I had a red velvet cupcake at ladybird bakery (sadly inedible) and a Nutella cookie around the corner at Butter Lane Bakery (what a seriously great name for a bakery) and we also discovered Dizzy’s diner – a no-frills place with great food! I got a chocolate malt shake to go with my veggie burger (when in Rome!).
That evening we headed to New Jersey to watch the WWE Smackdown (wrestling!) show. Needless to say this was more of a Lee activity, but it was actually really fun – the atmosphere was great and it was full of pumped up kids!
We also went to a baseball game, a gig, and a comedy show, the statue of liberty…
And ate a LOT of delicious food!
I visited some iconic bakeries, Momofoku, Baked, Magnolia Bakery and Levain – I’ll bring you a proper post on my thoughts on these! I also found time to browse in Anthropologie and Williams Sonoma, but I didn’t do much shopping generally. I was SO tempted to cram a Kitchenaid into my case though – why are things SO much cheaper in the US?!
and became addicted to THIS amazingness! I’m not sure whether I would be happier if they started selling it in the UK, or if it’s safer for my future non-obesity if they don’t!
Oh and we also visited Tom’s diner (Monks in Seinfeld), the Ghostbusters house (really a fire station!) and the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens.
Oh, and Coney Island and Central Park too!
We celebrated July 4th with about a million other people in Brooklyn Bridge Park, and came back on our last night for pizza at Fornino. The pizza was just okay, but the view was amazing! Followed by ice cream from Ample Hill’s Creamery – you must pay them a visit if you’re ever in Brookyn! I went for a pecan crunch scoop and a cinnamon cookie scoop!
But the most magical thing about Brooklyn (apart from just being there with my new husband!) was seeing a firefly for the very first time – it was so amazing! It’s hard to describe if you haven’t seen one but it took my breath away!
Have you ever visited New York?
