I recently visited George’s Fish and Chips Kitchen in Nottingham recently and its fabulous!
George’s opened just before Christmas 2014 and is one of a flurry of recent restaurant openings in Nottingham – my town is truly on the up!
The first thing to tell you is that the restaurant is wonderful – fun, quirky, beautifully decorated. George’s can’t take all the credit – they’re starting with great bones – grand ceiling heights and pillars that are left over from the buildings stint as the central post office (back in the days when post offices were this gorgeous).
But the thing that will truly impress kids (and big kids!) are the fun beach huts on a mezzanine above the restaurant.
We sampled pretty much all of the gin – based cocktails on George’s menu during our visit and they are delicious! One – Candy Annie (shown above) even comes with it’s own candy floss, made in house. A great time to visit is Friday evenings, as the cocktails are two for one between 5 and 7pm!
The highlight here is fish and chips, done properly, with mushy peas, twice cooked chips and fish the size of a cricket bat. Other main options include bubble and squeak, cheeseburger, scampi and chips or chicken balti pie.
For veggies, there aren’t LOADS of options – the emphasis is squarely on fish, so pescatarians will have much better luck. For mains, there are only two options- a mac and cheese and a veggie burger.
My veggie burger left two impressions – hot and mush – and no discernible flavour. It was also very difficult to eat, and completely fell apart. Interestingly they’ve now replaced it with the default slab of halloumi and a mushroom option, which I’d argue isn’t remotely a burger, but at least they’re open to feedback and refinement. The chips though are very tasty, and come with a bloody mary ketchup.
Desserts will be LOVED by kids – doughnuts with candy floss, ice cream, rice pudding, and a hot nutella and banana sandwich are all on offer – all incredibly fun. I tried the fresh doughnuts which were tasty, but let down by a sub-par chocolate sauce (not homemade – tasting) – why not just warm up some nutella?
Overall despite my meal not being great I loved George’s and would definitely recommend, especially if you have young kids! The staff were lovely, friendly and attentive, and the restaurant is just an incredibly fun place to be. I’ll be back again soon for more cocktails!
