Howdy cowgirls and guys! Rice Krispie Treats, Three Ways are another one in my series of American bakes! I really do think that rice krispie squares are about as quintessentially American as you can get – there are whole generations of kids who have grown up with them and now make them for their kids too.
There’s a few awesome things about them –
- They’re so easy to make – melting and stirring are all that’s involved!
- They’re super customisable! Add the chopped up chocolate (bounty, M&M’s, Smarties, Rolo’s!) of your choice for an even more decadent treat, or mix up the colour to match the season. Check out the amazing Cookies and Cups for loads of rice krispie inspiration!
- You can even make a cake with them!
Today I’m going to show you some great recipes for how to make marshmallow treats, chocolate treats, and strawberry treats!
Marshmallow Rice Krispie Treats
- 1/4 cup butter
- 4 cups marshmallows
- 5 cups rice krispies
- To decorate – mini marshmallows and sprinkles
First, get your five cups of rice krispies measured out, and a greased deep tin (I used a tupperware box) ready as you need to work fast once your marshmallow mixture is ready! Combine the butter and marshmallows (I used Prince’s) in a microwave proof bowl and melt on full power for 45 seconds, then remove and stir. If they are not yet fully melted, give them another 30 seconds.
Working fast, add your krispies to the marshmallow mixture and stir thoroughly, and tip the mix into your container. Press down firmly with the back of a metal spoon (or your hand inside a ziploc bag – to prevent stickiness).
Decorate with mini-marshmallows and sprinkles and leave for at least one hour in the fridge to set before cutting into squares.
Strawberry Rice Krispie Treats
- 1 jar strawberry marshmallow fluff (If you don’t have marshmallow fluff just melt regular marshmallows as in the recipe above and add Silver Spoon strawberry flavouring and some pink food colouring to the mixture). You can pick up strawberry marshmallow fluff in the UK from TK Maxx, Asda and online
- 1/4 cup butter
- 5 cups rice krispie treats
Melt your butter and combine it with the marshmallow fluff (if its a little firm, heat the jar for ten seconds in the microwave – it’s plastic and won’t melt in that time, but be careful that there’s absolutely no foil residue left on the rim). Combine your pink goo with the krispies, stir thoroughly and transfer to a thoroughly greased baking tin or container to set.
Chocolate Rice Krispie Treats
These are so simple I almost feel bad telling you how to make them! But not one but two people have asked me before how you make them (sincerely) so here goes!
- 450g Dairy Milk chocolate – there is no compromise on Rice Krispie Treats – it HAS to be Dairy Milk
- 900g Rice Krispies
- Sprinkles, mini-marshmallows or chocolate chips/chunks to decorate
Melt your chocolate in the microwave, taking it out every 40 seconds to stir (if you don’t it will burn and be ruined which would be a tragedy!). Once its thoroughly melted and runny, add your rice krispies and mix thoroughly – it helps to use a large metal spoon in a very large bowl. Once they’re mixed and the krispies are completely chocolatey, transfer the mix to a large metal baking tin or plastic container to set, preferably in the fridge. Don’t forget to lick the spoon – it’s the best bit!
As well as rice krispies, try experimenting with different cereals for fun no-bake treats – I tried Cheerio treats earlier in the year and they were fab!
Have fun making your own treats, and don’t forget to experiment! Peanut butter chocolate treats, Bounty bar chocolate squares, there are so many possibilities!

Gosh, this looks marvellous ! I’m so loving it! =D
thank you! I find them so addictive ๐
Rice Krispy cakes……wow not made them for ages, will have to make some now. Quick and easy for the school holidays when my 13year olds are bringing all their friends in during the school hols….and all wanting food!!!!
I know, perfect for kids and teenagers! I’m sure they’d disappear in record time with 13 year olds!
Who cares if they are simple, they are yum!
Indeed! Sooo yummy!
I thought of you last night Kerry. A friend and I watched Julie and Julia and all we wanted to do is eat. At one point we paused it and went out to get dessert. Your Rice Krispe snacks look amazing. I’m sure Julia as in Child would have loved them.
Great film – did you like it? What did you get for dessert?
Chocolate mousse cake, coconut cake and carrot cake all sliced lavishly. AMAZING
WOW. That sounds incredible. I was worried you were going to say frozen yoghurt! Go Susannah!
No, my friend got serious and that film is to blame. Everything looked so good. I even wrote a post on it. We ate like little piglets.
Definitely! When you see that film its just like ‘life’s too short not to eat amazing food’! I will stop by and check it out ๐
