Step by Step : making homemade tortilla chips

July 24, 2011 By Kerry Cooks 5 Comments

I started making homemade tortilla chips out of necessity – you can’t eat guacamole without them and I didn’t have time to go to tesco! But I’m going to keep making them because they taste so much better than shop-bought tortilla chips – they’re crunchy and chewy and they have these amazing puffy air bubbles.

In fact they’re so good that you could serve them at a fancy dinner party and pretty much convince people that they’re homemade.

Step 1 – Cut up tortillas into roughly triangular pieces (if tortillas aren’t a regular part of your life you need to do some serious rethinking – you can use them to make fajitas, enchiladas, quesadillas and they last FOREVER.

Step 2 – Brush the tortilla pieces with some olive oil, salt and pepper. You can go as crazy as you like here – cumin, rosemary and crushed fennel seeds would be great additions but its really up to you!

Step 3 – spread out the triangles on a baking tray and pop into a hot oven (160 degrees/gas mark 6). Keep such an EAGLE EYE on them though as they turn from golden to charred in the blink of an eye.

Yum – look how good they look! They go amazingly well with guacamole, houmous and anything else you can think of. They even taste amazing by themselves which is more than you can say for lots of shop-bought tortilla chips.

*Update* – I’ve just realised that normal tortilla chips are actually deep fried so these are a yummy healthy option!

They really were amazingly yummy – so much better than normal tortilla chips – and I only made them out of necessity but now I love them – funny huh!
